It’s crucial for the environment that eco friendly and sustainable plumbing solutions are utilised. Water efficient options include rain water tanks, solar hot water, water conservation such as grey water systems, water efficient showerheads, washing machines, toilets and taps. Government rebates are available on certain products so be sure to ask and OZZY PIPE PLUMBING can help you with all of the information.

Tips to save water and money:

*Choose appliances and fittings that offer the highest water efficiency label to minimise water usage.

*Products that carry a water efficiency usage label have been tested and from AAA to A, depending on their level of water efficiency.

AAA = Excellent

AA = Good

A = Acceptable

Install a rainwater tank

*The average 2,000 litre capacity rainwater tank can save up to 26,000 litres of water each year. These water savings could be significantly increased (up to 59,000 litres) if the tank is plumbed in for internal uses such as clothes washing or toilet flushing.

Only wash with a full load

*Use your washing machine only when you have a full load. Reducing your washing by just one load a week will save around 120 litres of water.

Replace your toilet

*Replace a standard single flush toilet with a dual flush system and you could save up to 90 litres a day.

Check your home for leaks

*Leaks can be extremely wasteful and costly. Save up to 30 litres a day by getting OZZY PIPE PLUMBING to repair leaks in and around your home.

*Get to know your water meter. If the numbers on it are turning while no water is being used in your home, you could have a leak.

*Check for leaking taps. Fixing a leaking tap is an easy way to use less water. One leaking tap can waste up to 2,000 litres a month. Replace washers as soon as taps begin to leak.

*Most leaks get worse over time, so maintenance and quick repairs are key to reducing the cost of leaks.

*Check for, and repair any leaking pipes. Constant damp patches in the garden, particularly during dry periods could indicate a hidden underground leak.

Take shorter showers

*Showers and baths account for 25% of all water used in an average home. Limiting your showers to 2 minutes or less will save around 24 litres of water each day.

*Don’t waste water while you wait for the hot tap to warm up. Keep a bucket handy to catch the water and use it on indoor plants or in the garden.

Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth

*Simply wet your toothbrush before you begin and use a glass of water to rinse your mouth. A running tap can use about 8 litres of water per minute.

*If you regularly keep the tap running while cleaning your teeth you could use up to 11,500 litres per year.

Consider water efficiency when buying new appliances

*Install a 3-star rated showerhead and you’ll save water and energy by using less hot water.

Washing machines

*Look for a front-loading washing machine with at least 4-and-a-half stars when you buy a new washing machine.

*It’s important to choose the highest Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme rating possible. For example, a WELS rated 4 star model uses up to 41% less water than a conventional washing machine.

*Generally front loaders are more water efficient than top loaders. Over one year, front loaders use around 3,000 litres less than top loaders.

Dishwashers

*When buying a new dishwasher, choose at least a WELS rated 4.5 star model, which uses as little as 15 litres per wash, compared to older models which use around 20 litres per wash. Have sparkling dishes and a lower water bill.

Taps

*Install water efficient taps or make your current taps water efficient by installing flow regulating aerators.

*The water efficiency ratings for taps measures water use in litres per minute

*Save water with single lever mixer taps. Level or mixer taps with a single lever or knob allow you to quickly find the right water temperatures, which means you don’t waste water trying to get the balance right. For a bathroom tap look for a minimum WELS star rating of 6.

*When looking for a kitchen or laundry tap, a minimum WELS star rating of 4 is considered water efficient.

*Aerating taps are relatively inexpensive and reduce the water flow rate by up to 50 per cent without reducing effectiveness and usefulness. These taps also reduce splashing.

*Quarter turn taps are designed to reach maximum flow with only a quarter turn. They’re ideal for older or disabled people. They are also less likely to leak and last longer than conventional taps.

Flow regulator

*A flow regulator can help reduce water use by up to 50% by allowing water to flow at set rates, whilst also providing softer water with less splashing.

*Install a reduction valve at your property boundary to save on high water pressure increasing flow rates from showers and taps.

Insulate hot water pipes

*Insulating hot water pipes can save water and power by retaining water heat and reducing the need to flush out cold water from hot water taps.

Water saving choices for new homes

*When planning a house, locate the hot water system and bathrooms, ensuites, laundry and kitchen as close to each other as possible. This reduces initial plumbing costs and saves water and energy by reducing the flushing of cold water from hot water taps.

Choose more  water efficient behaviours:

“*Wash your vegetables in a half filled sink rather than under a running tap.
* Keep a bottle of water in the fridge for drinking instead of running the tap until the water is cool.
* Thaw food in the fridge or microwave instead of under running water.
* Wait until you have a full load in your dishwasher or washing machine and use the economy mode. This can save you water and energy.
* Wash fruit and vegies in a half-filled sink instead of running water.
* Rinse your razor in the sink. Rinsing it under a running tap wastes lots of water.
* Compost”
